  • I went to the ER because I was bleeding when I knew I shouldn't be. I was 12 weeks, they confirmed it was miscarriage gave me some morphine and sent me home. I ended up back the next night because I couldn't even stand on my own (not common though). It took me about 2 weeks or so to get back to normal. I would go in just to be sure that she passed all the tissue, because if not she will need a D&C.

  • Unfortunately, I'm kind of an unwilling expert on miscarriage, having had four of them. At twelve weeks, your friend will probably be hurting enough that she'll want to go to the hospital for pain medication. When I miscaried that far into two of my four lost pregnancies, the cramping pains were almost as bad as labor contractions. Your friend may need a D&C, where a doctor opens her cervix and removes any remaining pregnancy matter. A D&C can damage the uterus, so many doctors will wait to see if nature takes its course first. Your friend will be sent home and told to wear pads as long as the bleeding persists, and not to worry unless she soaks four pads an hour. She'll need to follow up with her doctor, getting blood tests to make sure the pregnancy hormone drops off till none is left in her body. I neglected to follow up once and nearly died from a spontaneous hemorrhage six weeks later. Follow up!

  • I had several miscarriages, but mine were between 6 and 9 weeks. I went to the doctor, but was never hospitalized. I was able to go back to normal activity within a few days (sex 6 weeks) and was told to wait six months to try again.

  • I mc over labor day weekend. I talked to a the doc a bunch of times by phone, but "I'm a nurse" so I didn't go the hospital. I took demerol by mouth that she prescribed. It was pretty awful and I can remember 25 years later. I think I felt much better in about 2 weeks. I didn't have a d&c and I was 12 weeks too.

  • I was only in the hospital one day for both of mine. I think two months is a good healing time. The first couple of periods may be heavier. Take it easy for a few weeks. Obey your Dr.'s orders and rest if needed.
