Medicaid, etc. vs. "real" insurance

Has anyone else noticed that care is much, much better when you have "real" health insurance, whereas with Medicaid and the like doctors don't seem to care about how you're treated, what you need to talk about, etc.? Or is it just like that around here?

  • Never used it because I work hard to keep my son off of state insurance for fear of that so I'm not surprised. My 3 biggest motivators in providing for my son are a good neighborhood to grow up in, a good school to go to, and good health insurance.

  • not for me, i have real insurance and my kids are on medicaid and it seems like it is just the opposite - i get rushed, but they are willing to take more time when it is the kids.

  • I've never been on Medicaid, but I've always felt that doctor's visits are rushed.

  • My 3 yr old is also on medicaid, and she is able to go the hospital where she was born at, they have the top NICU in the nation as well as placed in the top 5 hospitals for their burn unit. The doctors there are so very good at their job, they also have some of the best looking pediatric docs I have ever seen! The longest I ever had to wait was an hour in half, but they had a roll over and kids were involved. The doctors and nurses never made me feel like I was an over protective or paranoid mom. And in the first 4 months I tell you what, they would have thought that! But me on the hand, I do not have medicaid anymore, I am on our county health plan, and I get to go to the training hospitals. And it sucks at times! But at least I do have something, a lot of others do not have anything.

  • Most of work hard at supporting our families. But when jobs are lost often times insurance is lost as well. Private insurance is unaffordable for most of us. We have no choice but to turn to the state for medical care. It may not be the best but it is far better than having nothing.

I didn't DV you, but that WAS insulting. Why? Because sometimes people work hard and STILL can't afford it. It can be rough. In addition, My son is disabled. He is covered by private insurance, but he has Medicaid as a back up because of the way the system in this state works.

Don't ASSume that all people who have children on Medicaid don't work hard.

I find it hard to find doctors that accept it where I live. In addition, they jump to tell you they don't accept it and are a bit condescending until I let them know my son as other insurance as well and the Medicaid is for his disability. Then they treat me just fine.
