I live in an area with a good sized Amish community. I have always enjoyed my interactions with them; they provide me (and others) fresh eggs, dairy, meat and a multitude of other things at a reasonable price. Heck, they even made my granddaughter a solid wood bed with head board for $100 last summer.
Last summer, a couple who live here during the summer offered to help them set up a co-op to sell their crafts, produce and other items. Provided a large space, plus a little nursery area. They charged nominal rent and a percentage of the sales. It was a win win because their community made money, as did the couple, and the rest of us benefited.
Fast forward to today. I went in to the store for eggs and was SHOCKED to see that this couple is opening a Dollar Store in that space and has shunted the Amish over to a tiny corner of the building. They've now crammed all their handmade furniture in with the produce and other groceries. There's barely room to walk.
I asked one of the Amish farmers what was going on and he said, quietly, that the owner profit wasn't high enough to support their project anymore so they could stay, but they had to pay a higher percentage of their profits.
What frustrates me is two fold: First, we were told this was a COMMUNITY project and was not profit based and, second, we have a population of 200. A Dollar Store? Really? To top it off, the Dollar Store will now compete with our year round resident who just spent a fortune to renovate the new, tiny grocery store.
How would you feel? Would you express your concerns/support?
