I was discharged from the US Army due to a personality disorder

The discharge was generalized, occurred 20 years ago, and happened during basic training. I've always assumed I wouldn't be available for any veteran's benefits, but a couple friends think I may be.n Does anyone know?

  • Doesnt hurt to contact them but I dont think you will. I think you would have need to be officially in the Army and not discharged during basic.

  • If you didn't complete basic or the minimum requirement of enlistment than you are not eligible for benefits.

  • nothing wrong with trying. my dad was injured during basic, and discharged, and he receives benefits (well, his health care is covered, but i am not sure what "full benefits" entails anyway).

  • Did the personality disorder occur while you were in basic (meaning you got it while there) or did you have it before you tried joining?

  • You could contact them and ask, but I highly doubt you qualify for anything. You didn't even complete basic.

  • Depends on the RE code on the DD214 LONG form. Contact your local VA office for more info.
