50th Wedding Anniversary gift or way to acknowledge this?

Hi,
So Mom and Dad are having their 50th and we are having a fancy dinner. There are four daughters and while we thought putting a video montage together would be nice, it's not likely to happen. All of us live thousands of miles apart so collaborating on this kind of thing is very difficult. Does anyone have any ideas at all? We are getting together for two days over the dinner and everyone is flying in for the dinner. It's a bit tough to put the project on one of us also as the photos are spread out in five homes including my parents (and this was supposed to be a surprise). I'm just finding it to be impossible and now I'm panicking. : (

  • For my grandparents 50th (which they've now been married nearly 63 years!), I put together a photo album. I went to Things Remembered and got a beautiful album with a silver cover and had it engraved with their names and "50 years" on the front. Then I got a picture from their wedding to put in the cover where it allowed for a picture. Then I put a (at that time) current photo of them on the first page. Then an individual shot of each of their 5 kids in age order, then the kids with their spouses, then with their spouses and kids, then the grandkids with their kids (which at that time was only one of my cousins) and a beautifully typed up page that fit in the next photo slot after the last pic with the words "...and more to come" on it. It was easier because we were all there for Christmas (they got married NYE), but you could all send the pics to one central person and have them put it all together. Even email the pics to

  • Yhe montage would be great but you ould need to haveone in charge and doing the work and the rest of you would have to send your things to her.

Again you would need a coordinator but you could do a collective scrapbook. Have different poepl write out stories that they remember about you mom and dad and pictures etc.

  • HOw about someone takes the lead in creating the montage. have everyone else scan in their pics, they can even have walgreens or CVS do it for them to save time. they send the pics to the leader of the project to put it all togethers.

  • there are places that take home movies and put them on DVD. they will scan your pics too. So have everyone convert old tapes to DVD now. everyone takes care of your own. whoever lives closest to your parents takes theirs and does it for them. You tell you parents that their anniversary present is all of their old home movies will be converted to digital. and their current videos will be burned to disks to make them easy to use. you are doing this for them. the video montage is the added gift they don't know about.

Then everyone comes up with clips to add to the montage. send all of these to the same place that converted the movies to put together the final montage.

Everyone has small responsibilities but the work is done by professionals.

  • You can still do the video, from different places. It doesn't have to be all of you in one place.

If the people who were in their wedding party are still living and you can get in touch with them, try to get something from them as well. For my parents' 40th, we got video from several different relatives on the east coast and they loved it.

For their 50th, we threw them a surprise party and got family members to come out in secret! And I'm so glad we did because my dad passed away three years later, my mom a year and a half after that. It was the last chance they got to see some of those family members.

  • Check into Shutterfly - a co-worker used that to put together a 50th wedding anniversary booklet. Really turned out well. Perhaps each one could contribute a picture (or a few).
