  • The roach would definitely bother me. She probably ignored it hoping you didn't see it.

As for her telling you get ready for colds. The truth is, kids do get sick more often in day care or pre-school...or at school period. They're exposed to more germs. They rub their noses and touch toys without washing their hands, sneeze on things, cough on things and even lick things, then the next child touches these things and gets sick too. There's no way around it.

I'd probably keep looking because of the roach, and if I didn't feel good about the principal. Find a place where both your child and you feel good. Good luck mama!

  • I would say no about the roach. That is gross. As for the germs, better get used to it. The first time kids hit any kind of daycare or school they tend to come down with more colds and other illnesses.

  • I personally would go elsewhere. Where there is one roach there are bound to be more.... But that is just me. As for your kid catching a cold that is bound to happen. Kids are kids :)

  • Germs and common illnesses, like colds, are part and parcel of daycare settings. That doesn't, and didn't, bother me all that much. Cockroaches in a daycare setting are a deal breaker for me. I would have walked out the door as soon as I saw it and NEVER returned.

  • Oh, and kids NEED to be exposed to germs from a young age. It really does help their immune systems. I don't know HOW many moms I've seen fanatically wiping every surface they can think of down with Lysol, or some other antibacterial, a little too often. Then, they wonder why their kids are sick with the same cold for months on end.

Like that old saying from my childhood goes: God made dirt and dirt don't hurt. God made grass so kiss my ass. (Ok, maybe not the last part....)

  • Colds are common in daycare but I would have been a bit alarmed that she felt the need to express that. However the conversation wouldn't have even made it that far cuz I'd have gone running for the hills the second I saw a roach. Hell no.
