Why do I have idiot neighbors? I just got one neighbor on my side over a year ago and now I have another annoying one.
I am a kindergarten teacher and I had my class at recess one day and a little stray dog turned up on the play ground. She is an adorable sandy blonde terrier/poodle cross and is 25 pounds of pure sweetness. We searched for her owners but we never found them so I decided that she was too good of a dog to end up at the pound so I kept her and named her Sandy. She is a great dog, sweet and wonderful with my kids. The only problem is that she is a runner. It isn't often, but once every few months or so, she slips out the door and runs. Most of the time, she walks all over the yard with me and the other dogs and the children. She is usually gone for the night and comes home but it worries me. The other night, my four year old went outside to the car to get something and Sandy and my collie went outside with her (I prefer for the dogs to go outside with her). Sandy, however, took off towards the road and I called her and the collie chased her but she slipped away before anyone could get her. My kids were upset all night. She normally sleeps on the foot of my four year old's bed and she didn't want to go to sleep without Sandy. First thing in the morning, I called the shelter and asked about her and went out to search.
I got a call about 6:00 pm from a woman that had picked up Sandy off the side of the road. She lived about two miles from me and got my number from her ID tag. The woman was very nice. She told me that she found Sandy on the side of the road and she looked like she wasn't hurt or anything. She said that she such a sweetie and she knew that she must have a good home. She gave me directions to her house and I explained how she got outside and that my daughter was so upset and couldn't sleep all night. She said that she understood and she had two dogs and she knew how easy it was for them to get outside. I left the kids with my husband and drove to her place and knocked on the door. When she opened the door, Sandy ran too me and I checked her over. I thanked her for finding Sandy and for calling me.
For some reason, she got all haughty and then completely changed her tune. "You ought to be ashamed of yourself. You are an irresponsible pet owner. It is your job to keep your dog locked up. She could have been killed. I think people that just let there dogs run all over the place should have all of their pets taken away and never be allowed to own one again. Just so you know, I called animal control and they will be at your house tomorrow and if they don't take away all of your animals then I will make sure that they do if Sandy turns up on my street again so your little girl had better get used to not having that doggie in her bed. I called you this time as a courtesy to you and your family but next time I will just call animal control. So your little girl will just have to learn to sleep without her." After that, she slammed the door in my face and I just left with my dog.
Animal control showed up today and I told him what happened. The officer said that the case was unfounded and there was no reason for the woman to have called. The report said that I left the dog in her yard. She called and completely lied. It just pisses me off. The officer apologized and told me that they wouldn't come out again.
Why is it that, when people see a dog running around, they just assume that the owners are irresponsible. My other two dogs are so well trained that, if my collie is running after a squirrel, and it goes out of the yard, then she will fall all over herself to keep from stepping out over the boundary line. My coonhound will stand at the edge of the yard to bark at other dogs. Sandy is the only one that ever runs off. This just pisses me off.
