Sprained ankle

So I sprained my ankle and my foot about a month ago, and just recently stopped wearing a brace to work (I'm a retail manager). My ankle has still been a bit sore but for the past coupledays it is throbbing, and I find if I step just right it feels like it did when I first sprained it all over again. Some people/places say it takes 4-6 weeks to heal a sprain, my question is at what point would you consult your Primary Care Physician? Or would you contact Orthopedics?

  • A badly sprained ankle can take several months to completely heal. However if you are still having significant pain I would consult a podiatrist. There may be a torn tendon or even an unhealed fracture.

  • See an orthopedist- you may or may not need a referral from your primary care doctor. Good luck! I hope you feel better soon.

  • I'd go to my primary. And until you get an appt, put the brace back on. It may just be an issue of time healing it, but it's better to be safe than sorry

  • I sprained an ankle as a child, and I still feel pain from it today at times, sometimes as bad as it was back then. Sometimes you're just stuck with it. I'd go in and have it checked out to make sure things are healing the way they should, maybe get a second opinion if you really think something is wrong, since it is so soon after the initial injury. But down the road, you might find that there is some occasional pain that you're just stuck with.

  • orthopedist is only going to be able to tell if there are bone problems. You need to go for a foot and leg doctor, A Pediatrist.

  • I treat this kind of thing professionally. If you feel you need follow up defiantly see an orthopedist - this is exactly what they treat!! PCP's often drop the ball on this kind of injury. They have a wait and see attitude when you really should be rehabing from day one (with in pain limits)!!!

It can take up to a year for the swelling to stop after exercise or a full work day. It's OK to wear to brace during your work day if you are more comfortable. Did you do any rehab exercises?? That can make a HUGE difference in the healing process of a ligament injury!
