Step kid wanting to call me mom

I just recently got married I have a step daughter she is 6. She asked me if she could call me mommy and I politely told her that she can call me something along the term of mom but that she does have a mommy. (already discussed this with her mom, and her mom wants to be the only one called mom, I agree and respect this) Did I handle this the right way?

  • Honestly, I think the biological mother is acting selfish and unreasonable. Your stepdaughter is looking for stability in her life. So what if she calls both of you Mom? If you're both giving her support and comfort, you're both mothering her. Why should either of you be insecure about it?

    Did you give her some ideas about what to call you instead of Mommy? Using your first name may be uncomfortable for your stepdaughter at her age. My stepkids are sixteen and twenty, and they call me by my first name, which they did when I was just a family friend--before things got complicated. That's fine with me, whatever they're comfortable with. You and your husband and his ex better put your thinking caps on and come up with something original, I guess.
