  • The only true indication of your milk supply is wet diapers. Pumping really gives no true account of what you are making. And if baby goes through occasional periods of wanting to nurse more frequently it's likely a growth spurt, which will, in turn, get you to produce more. If you give a bottle of formula the problem will still be there. It's not that the formula is horrible per se, but if it's because you think you aren't prodcing, baby is the best way to bump up production. If you need to leave baby and can't pump it well, then go for it.

  • I didn't produce enough milk with my girls and as a result, they both needed to be formula feed. And, they are now both healthy & thriving.

  • I would try to feed on demand for a while if you are really wanting to breast feed. Introducing the bottle can cause problems and make you produce less, feeding on demand should get your supply up. The more often you feed the more you produce. Essentially there is nothing wrong with formula, but introducing it may make your baby bottle dependent because it's easier to get stuff out of a bottle than a breast. Because of combination feeding my dd self weaned at 3 months, she decided she no longer wanted breast milk at all.

  • That us only something you can decide. Your baby will be healthy and fine either way.

  • If you are there and give formula,. you will restrict the amount of milk you make. So... formula is OK in moderation IF YOU ARE NOT THERE. If you are there, you may as well be slicing a piece of your breast away.

  • Formula is fine as an exclusive form of feeding so yes it is also ok as a supplement.

  • what do you mean by "in moderation"? if you mean is it healthy, then yes. both of my kids were (eventually) formula fed and are leaps and bounds healthier than other kids their age.

now if you meant production wise, if you give a bottle of formula without BFing first that will send signals to your body that less milk is needed. so your body will start to produce even less milk. now if you are just pumping (thats what i did) then it will be fine so long as you continue to pump on schedule.

  • You can join the breastfeeding group to discuss your supply issue. Sometimes women think they aren't producing enough but they really are producing plenty. If you start giving formula then you will produce even less milk. Their are things you can do to build supply. What are you experiencing that leads you to believe your supply is low?
