5 Bumps

Do you really think that not having a gun would have stopped James Holmes?

Of course politicians are using this situation for an example on why we need to change our gun laws.

I however think that someone that disturbed and messed up would have used different means if he had not been able to find guns, oh, like maybe a bomb. Since his boobie trapped apartment clearly shows he had the know how.

IMO if someone is dead set on something like that (and supposedly their evidence shows he had been planning this for a while), they will go to whatever means necessary to achieve it. Sad, but true.

  • You're right, no hunter would use an AK47...BUT an avid firearms collector and someone who thoroughly enjoys shooting would enjoy one. I have two and trust me if anyone breaks into my house the last thing they want to see is my AK, AR or SKS looking back at them. Its fun as crap to shoot too!

  • I'd like to see some gun control (don't ask me how) for accidental shootings with kids, suicides, etc. but this guy was clearly a wacko. If he hadn't had access to 4 maybe fewer people would be hurt/dead though.

  • Two things would have happened if he didn't have easy access to guns. Either 1) he would have had to take more time to plan because he would have to take into account the fact that he had to purchase his firearms illegally, which would possible take longer depending on what he was looking for (because gun control won't ever limit the number of guns available illegally), or 2) he would have taken many, many more lives by blowing up the entire theater instead... he wanted to make some sort of sick statement and get his moment of fame. The media has given him that and now his name will be in the history books. Doesn't matter how it's done, just as long as it's done, at least that's likely what ppl like Holmes think.

  • Ftr... the gun used was likely an AR-15 that was purchased at Gander Mountain. He also purchased a couple of Glocks both there and at Bass Pro Shop. Those places are said to have followed the rules. There's a fine line between attempting to stop crazies from obtaining weapons, and taking the right away from law abiding hunters and collectors. Idk what the answer is. A guy like Holmes will find a way to obtain what he wants for his needs... even if it takes a little longer that they'd o do so.

^^^ LOL! I bet it is! I've never shot anything like that but always wanted to. Don't know anyone w/ something like that. And I do get the fact that he or others like him will just come up w/ more horrible ways to cause the devastation they are set on causing. Like I said before, I really don't have the answer, & not sure if anyone will come up w/ one. We can't protect ourselves from sick people like that I'm afraid. Not unless someone close to them picks up on their weird signals & alerts someone. Of course the authorities would have their hands tied unless they actually do something. So it's a catch 22. :(

  • Well, his family did pick up on it, but of course nothing they could do because he hadn't broken the law, and it's not like they could do anything because he was over 18.

I am sure it is. I do think that there should be a license for every firearm purchased. You cannot buy a car and drive it without a license, nor can you get married without a license, I even have to have a license for my dog! In NY I think the wait time is 3 months to get a permit. I know some states are stricter than others. I don't see why it is a problem for everyone to get a permit or license? So if you live in OKC and move to NY what are you going to do with your guns?

I guess because I live in a state where most people do not have guns in there homes I can't understand the objection to getting a permit or license.

  • Not having a lot of experience with guns I can only say this, as far as gun control is concerned: I would like to see more Constancy state to state as far as registration, purchasing and carrying laws. And I would like to see the laws that are in place better enforced. I know a lot of people are against registration of a weapon but I honestly wonder if a person buying and consequently registering 4 weapons in 60 would have sent up any red flags...? I have no idea.

  • Was it is obvious he had a working knowledge of bombs so I feel relatively certain that if he did not have a gun he would have used another means and perhaps slaughtered more people. Bombs as everyone knows can be made with household items and easily obtained items.
Fire is another possible way to kill people and the list goes on.

  • To me this guy knew what he was doing, and why he was doing it. My hope he will give valuable info out that will help authorities in the future. But nobody will ever know if someone with a gun could have stopped this, cause its illegal in most states with concealed carry laws that forbid firearms in entertainment areas such as a movie theater, sports arena, anywhere it may have 2500 (give or take different laws for each state) people inside or more. Why else when you hear of mass shootings like this happen in areas that is illegal to carry. Schools and college campuses for example. I guess that one of the frustrations I have when folks start in on more gun control. All its gonna do is open the door for other to get killed cause they are law abiding people, and won't bring their gun to a place where its not allowed. If airplane pilots were allowed to carry, do you think 9/11 would have been adverted?
