Is there a way to graduate school early with your HS Diploma not a GED?

My 17 yr old just moved in with us from out of state, he would be a senior in high school this Fall. He would be going to a new school for his last year of HS. The schools here arent very good and its to late to really get him anywhere like a Charter. He would only need 3 credits to graduate. Is there a way for him to get his HS Dipolma with out physically attending school. Could he take a test or graduate early? Besides the GED.

  • I'd call the school district to see. My oldest daughter graduated six months early and received a diploma, no problem. She had taken several classes at the community college that were offered by the school district, free of charge. That provided her enough credits to graduate early.

  • I graduated early, but I doubled up on credits. By the end, most people are only short a couple of credits, usually in English and math. As far as I know, you can't test out of it and get a diploma.

  • you may be able to attend a online program or private home school program that would allow summer classes to get ahead. I am in Ga and I know we have a few choices of that nature.

  • You could look into k12 online schools.

Are you trying to get him into college early? If so, around here, community colleges don't even require a high school diploma or GED, you just take their entrance exam and then the college you transfer to (if applicable) looks at your scores from the community college.

Or, you could home school with the classwork he needs, at the pace it takes, and graduate him yourself.

  • I graduated early attending the high school program at our local technical school. I did have to attend school physically, but I only had to take the credits I needed (2.5) as opposed to all that my high school would have made me take (6), and it was all self-paced. I had to complete a certain number of assignments per class (can't remember how many assignments) and score at least a B on all assignments in order to pass the class. There was a teacher available for questions, but no teaching. Personally, I loved it. Maybe there's something like that where you live?

Otherwise, all I can think of is homeschooling. I homeschool my kids (they are a lot younger than yours) and they love it, and we move rather quickly. He's old enough that he'd be able to do a lot of work independently, without your help - like I did at the tech school, just at home.

  • If he plans on attending college he can very likely go ahead and start community college as a high school senior. You best bet it to check the websites of a few local community colleges. IE I just learned this week that our state will pay for some core classes as a part of the dual enrollment ACCESS program

  • Online. Call the school and find out if they offer online classes for him to finish online. Otherwise, look for other online high school programs.
