4 Bumps

Suspicions all over the internet that James Holmes could have Asperger's syndrome...

I have to admit... it crossed my mind as well, when they mentioned his childhood descibed him as award and praised his brilliance... and this terrifies me... Schizophrenia has also been mentioned as a possibility . But saying this man could be Autistic... like my son... God I hope he is not. I hope he is just insane...

What are your thoughts?

  • I am with Kword, but Op this guy is many things, but insane is NOT one of them. Sociopath maybe...psychopathic...but insane? But insane? No way in hell. There was too much detailed planning in that shooting. Months of planning. This man shouldn't be able to put up a insanity defense. I do however, feel for the defense atty who has to take his case. He will be public enemy #1

  • It is difficult to say. I think Paranoid Schizophrenia is a good possibility-but I will wait for all the evaluations to be completed. I am sure they will have some top notch people evaluating him. This is so tragic such a brilliant mind-such wasted potential.

  • A lot of brilliant people have Aspergers type traits. And, so does he. But, his actions required a psychotic break. He obviously had one within the last year or so.

  • If (big if) he is, he's very likely undiagnosed, or else his parents are some very despicable people to pretend they don't know. And if he is, that doesn't automatically make him some kind of sadist.

I visit a lot of forums where people are quick to throw around Asperger's diagnoses to anyone remotely quirky on tv or in the news (even one of the current Big Brother contestants - conveniently the only one who doesn't look like he has an agent). That habit makes me skeptical of any report that isn't coming directly from a doctor who has examined the person in question.

Whether this guy has any sort of diagnosable condition or not, I think it's pretty much a foregone conclusion that the suggestion of one will be raised, and this will be dragged out for 2 years, just like Loughner.

  • I don't know. I don't have any experience with Asperger's. I will wait for the investigation and psychological evaluations to be made. It's possible he has some disorder(s), but it's also possible he was just an evil guy that wanted to kill people. Time will tell.

  • I don't have enough experience with Aspergers to speculate, but maybe he is both. He has to have something wrong with him more than just Aspergers I would think.

  • I just thought of something, if this guy had Aspergers, one would think he couldn't have been able to buy a gun. I mean they are not allowed to join the military. But the CO gun laws are pretty relaxed. More so then MI. But I don't know if Aspergers is considered a mental illness or not.

  • Michigan-Mom, I would think it would have been an undiagnosed case if he had it.
