Would you secretly treat a kids hair for lice?

Here is my situation. DD's niece comes over all the time with lice. I tell her idiot mother, but she is in such denial over her having them. Yesterday I sat down and pulled 25 out of her hair, taped them to a piece of paper and took them over to her house to show idiot mother. Her response, "DD go grab the mayo out of the box...I'm gonna mayo you again" WTF does that even mean?

I have banned her from the house until her idiot mother gets rid of them. BUT, I feel horrible about it, because it is not the little girls fault. I'm seriously considering treating her hair with Rid the next time she comes over. BUT, that will not resolve her sheets, pillows, stuffed animals etc., so she'll likely get them again!

Ugh....I can't keep going through this. I swear that woman is an idiot. I pulled one out of her hair last week, showed idiot mother and she swore up and down it was dirt. "Dirt moves ya know!!"

  • Well, mayo does work- I actually prefer Olive Oil- but if mom doesn't treat toys etc. as mentioned even the Rid won't help.
I would treat for child's safety and comfort. I wouldn't keep it a secret. After I did it I would tell mom. I may even offer to go over and treat the house. (because you said you were related)
If I were not related, I would banish. My kid's safety and health comes before EVERYONE else's.

Does she have a partner (husband) you can talk to? Or another more aggressive relative?

  • IMO, it is child abuse to have a child chronically have bugs crawling all over them, biting their skin. I would be letting her know that if she didn't do something about her child's hair, treat everyone in the family, and clean everything the eggs/bugs can live on in her house...I would be contacting social services to do something about it so the little girl didn't have to suffer.

  • It's cruel to continue to let your children be infested with lice. I'm not sure who should be contacted but you might start with the health department and get some suggestions from them. Also check with your pedicatrician.

  • I don't know what you can do except keep her away from your house. Like you said, unless everything in their house is cleaned and sanitized, getting them out of the child's hair won't solve the problem. I recently read though that the lice can only survive for 24 hours without a human host, so it might be that you could keep the child at your house for a couple of days. If you did that and shampooed her hair with the treatment, you might get rid of them for her. Mom could have them, too, though, or if there are other people living in the house. I hate the things. Our youngest granddaughter(not quite 3) recently came home with them, and we have no idea where she got them.

  • google Fairy Tales shampoo and cond. It is an all natural lice prevention for kids.. does the mother realize that she probably has them as well, and the kid is going to get sent home over and over from school, and be "stigmatized" as the "lice" kid? Mayo and olive oil both work, but sounds like the whole house is infested, so you best bet is to get her the products and that will at least keep her from getting re-infested, and protect your kid and your family,, she sounds like a nit-wit,, is this the one that gives a 1 year old gum too? LOL

  • if dd has lice they all have lice and the whole house has lice. mayo isn't going to steam clean the furniture and bag the toys and wash the clothes.

Also, it wouldn't be right of you to put chemicals on a child that wasn't yours without permission like that.

    Poor kid.

  • Mayo and olive oil DO work. They suffocate the lice so they die. But she also has to pick all the eggs out of her hair. It sounds like she is very aware that her daughter has lice or why would she have already put mayo in her hair. She's lying to you so that she can send her over to your house (and whoever elses). But she has to treat her whole house too, not just her daughter's head.

As far as you doing it. I wouldn't put any chemicals on her head without her permission, but I would put olive oil on her head and pick the bugs and nits out. But there's not point in doing it if she isn't treating the house.
