Buy American, the followup

For those not keeping up, there is a clause in the bill from hell stipulating only US made steel can be used unless certain exceptions are met. The EU and Canada are now both threatening retaliation.
"A European Commission spokesman said it was the "worst possible signal" the Obama administration could send out.

The EU will launch a complaint with the World Trade Organisation (WTO) if the clause remains, the spokesman said.

The EU and Canadian ambassadors to Washington have already warned that the clause could promote protectionism and trigger retaliatory moves."
So now what, if they pass it with that language, we are raped by the WTO, if they don't pass it, they are giving in to external pressure. Either way, I think we're seriously hosed now, but which option is worse?

  • Only if it helps. If the EU and Canada and China put trade sanctions against us, our GDP is going to drop like a rock.

Not necessarily. We have been importing way more than exporting the last couple of decades. Therefore, our dollars have been going to financially strengthen other countries while putting domestic industries out of business.

If China were to put trade sanctions or an embargo on the USA, then we would be forced to buy products from within. This would bring back a lot of industrial jobs because our demand would no longer be met by outside sources.

One of the best things that Obama could do would be to reverse NAFTA and bring the jobs back.

  • the only way to create and maintain American jobs is for us to use American made products - it would be ridiculous to use foreign steel to rebuild America's infrastructure

  • You don't create many jobs if the people you piss off refuse to buy your products created with that steel.

  • Buying only American is nice in theory, but realistically it eventually will hose the American people. I agree with you. It's basic economics. You go with the person who can make the supply for the least amount of money. In a large order, several companies are necessary. It stimulates the economy and doesn't force the industry in one nation to drive prices up.

It is the Global economy that is hurting, not the American Economy. If you support the entire thing, it "evens out". I'm probably not saying this as eloquently as I could.

John Nash said it best. The best result doesn't come from doing what's best for yourself. It comes from doing your best for yourself, and everyone else.

  • So Canada and the EU are going to black mail us. Nice. We should let these assholes defend themselves and pull all aid we provide to them.

  • Uh... I'm sorry, but CA and the EU could take a freakin' leaf outta that way of doing things. The whole world would be better off if everyone worked harder to strengthen their communities at home.
