1 Bump

Just got the call from the vet.... :( Need your help here ladies

simple frownMy poor lab/sheppard probably has cancer.  Took her to the vet today for check up & possible kidney infection.  She is eating & drinking fine & acts like her usual goofy self.  But due to extreme weight loss over last couple of years, testing was done.  Vet thinks it's probably cancer.  I know we should be grateful to have had her almost 13 yrs & need to enjoy her & make her as comfortable as possible.  But knowing she's sick is just so heartbreaking.  I hope we have a lot more time to enjoy her.  Our other dog is a year older & the thought of losing them both in the near future just sucks!!!!  :(

  • I have had several that had cancer so I am so sorry to hear about your dog. In some of mine the Cancer spread fast so there was not much time with them but a few of them had months. I see nothing wrong with letting him be as long as he is not in pain. Just remember that animals will continue to do things for us no matter how much pain they may be in. But he will tell you when it is time.

  • I am sorry that your family is dealing with this, but we all know that our animals won't outlive us when we take them into our homes to love them. We can only love them as long as they are alive and with us. You will have your memories of her when she is gone. Just make sure to prepare your kiddos for the inevitable. Hugs to you all.

We had a cat with cancer but didn't know it until she needed to be put down. We went to an emergency clinic and they didn't read the x-rays right so she had to suffer through the night with my SO syringing her water to keep her hydrated. It wasn't a tough decision to put her down b/c we knew she was in pain.

  • I lost both of my girls this year. It is hard, but I hated that one was so lonely and frail without the other. Comfort care is what I would suggest.

  • Without tests, the vet has no business saying it is cancer. Get the testing done before you decide anything ~ and then you'll have a much better idea of what your options are. Given the age of your dog, it may be something like Chron's/ibs, etc. and those can be managed. Both are very common in most dog breeds as they age. If your vet doesn't want to do even minimal tests, I'd be looking for a different vet in fast forward. No way would I consider putting an animal down on a 'probably', and no way would I not consider other problems. Cancer IS a possibility, but it's only one of many. Hugs though, because I've lost several of my older pets over the past two years, and have two elderly dogs myself at the moment. It's never easy to say that goodbye.

  • Mrsmom, I definitely wasn't bashing, and from the sounds of it you have already decided to give your dog lots of love and good care regardless. I'd do the same thing ~ and at 13 years old, chemo would be pretty harsh with very limited benefits for you or your dog. If she's happy, playing, and not in pain, I think you've made the right call. We lose our pets in such a short time (comparatively) and I generally do exactly what you are doing. The only time I really think about/opt for expensive tests or treatment is for a young and otherwise healthy animal. I've dropped $5000 without a thought, and I've sobbed quietly while easing an older and well loved pet out of this life. I've also lost a few to just freaky weird things and still do the 'what if/should have' in hindsight years later. Love her and spoil her while you can ~ that can't ever be taken away.
