Any ideas on fattening up an underweight dog?

My vet says my dog who is sick needs to gain weight. She suggested mixing in Puppy Chow w/ her food. She also suggested canned food. We sneak her table scraps too. My other dog CAN'T afford to gain any weight, esp. w/ her bad hips. So since she is going deaf, I need ideas of foods I can sneak to my other dog that will help her gain weight. Any ideas?

  • Get a tube or two of Nutrical for the underweight pup. I agree with pp as far as feeding the underweight one in another room for extra food. I'd also be looking for a 'working' dog food rather than puppy chow since dogs and puppies have crucial nutritional needs ~ although I'd ask the vet which would be better since he knows what is wrong with your dog.

  • Separate the 2 dogs during meal times. The underweight one can have is food in peace and not have to worry about the older one stealing anything. It would also help you gage how much he is eating.

  • Get them on a good quality food and then you can add some wet food to the food. Increase the amount you are feeding the one dog and Maybe add an extra meal in there.

  • So you set out food twice per day. before you set out their grazing food, put the other dog outside. give the underweight one something fantastic when it is just the two of you. (eating is a bit social for pups too.)

Bil Jac is found in the refrigerated section and dogs really love it. I would try that. It is food, but we use it for treats.

  • I would suggest you leave the grazing food as it and take the underweight dog into another room for an additional meal each day. Something he will eat in one sitting. Wet puppy food is something to try though keep in mind this may also cause some amount of stomach upset too. Another option is to talk to your vet about critical care diets like science diet AD which is just a very high calorie canned diet you could supplement with.

  • puppy chow is great its ment for high motabolizms that growing puppies have so it contains less fillers and more good stuff. the brand i feed is called "chicken soup for the puppy" it contains no corn or wheat fillers, plus its considered a "natural" feed. it comes in wet food & dog chow

  • ^^ yeah, that might be a problem since the food dish gets filled 2xs a day. Once in the am & again around 5 pm. They graze throughout the day. Taking mouthfuls like little chipmunks & eating it in another room. :p I know I can probably sneak her the canned stuff no problem. I was just wondering, besides treats, what other foods I could sneak to her.
