http://news.yahoo.com/mississppi-church-refuses-marry-black-couple-205218322--abc-news-topstories.html

I am just stunned that this kind of thing is still happening. When will we get past all this nonsense?!

  • So, instead of being the leader he is supposed to be and standing up for what is right, he chose keeping his job over marrying a black couple? Nice guy.

  • Not even remotely surprised. The real shock is people who do not understand this happens all the time. From weddings to proms there are still many people uncomfortable with intergrated events or holding an all black event.

  • You are right. Seriously what the hell is wrong with people. I need my blood pressure meds after reading that crap.

  • "There has never been a black wedding at the First Baptist Church in Crystal Springs, Miss., since its founding in 1883. According to Pastor Stan Weatherford, some church members objected so strongly to breaking that precedent, they threatened to oust him from his pastorship. Rather than risk his job, Weatherford, who is white, said he decided to marry the pair at a black church down the road."

Seriously?? WTF?? Those people should be ashamed of themselves.

  • Holy shit, this is added to the list of why I don't live in the South..

So you are showing your extreme open mindedness by lumping together an entire group of people and judging them by the actions of a few......Sooooo I am to deduce that you also avoid Muslims because of the multitude of stories of that religion's violence? I think the word you are looking for is Hypocrite.

As for the church....if they hold this bigoted view WHY would you WANT to get married there. Like all other things (business, groups, people) that hold these views they will be put out of business, or left with few friends, due to their own stupidity. What is sad is it seems this a church they had BEEN going to. How awful to find out those you thought were your community turned against you! However it does no one any good to swing the pendulum of overly judgmental to the far other side.....

  • This isn't anything new, it's just not as common as it used to be. What amazes me is how often people who are absolutely shocked that this is allowed, are the same ones insisting gay marriage can't be legal because churches will be forced to perform them. If you don't want your church performing gay marriage, why are you suggesting this one be forced to perform one for someone they don't want to marry?

NO church in the United States can be forced to marry someone the church does not want to marry. That is their constitutional right, no matter how repugnant it may be to the majority of people, and it's not going to change.

  • That is disgusting. I think there are many areas that still discriminate in the USA but we don't hear about them often enough. The truth is hidden. And there were even segregated Proms in the South recently-maybe some still ARE! Its so sad. http://www.southernstudies.org/2009/07/culture-beat-prom-night-in-black-and-white.html

People still secretly keep the races apart in many families , churches , neighborhoods and businesses. Everywhere. It shouldn't be that way.

  • And this final gem...

The church is now holding internal meetings to figure out how it should respond to future requests by black couples to be married there, Weatherford told WLBT-TV.

  • "Holy shit, this is added to the list of why I don't live in the South. To verbalize and give any sort of weight to this sort of racism is beyond words." [adnilm]

Mississippi DOES NOT represent the entire South. What an asinine and bigoted thing to say. That's like saying that you are a representation of all Catholics and that they are all as hateful towards others as you tend to be.
