Toileting regression?

my 2 and a half year old (not the middle child i was also having concerns with) is suddenly regressing with her toileting success. she's been toilet trained for about 6 months now, only wearing a pull up at night because she's not night-time trained. she rarely makes it to the potty anymore and pees right on the floor, then doesn't even tell anybody. yesterday i actually heard her playing in her puddle of pee! but lately i'm finding pee puddles everywhere. sometimes she'll take it upon herself to change her bottoms, others she'll just continue walking around wet, depending what she's wearing.

at preschool, she was doing great there too and never had any accidents there. now suddenly she's peeing at naptime.

i get the occasional accident, but this is a daily thing now and she doesn't seem to really get me when i'm telling her where she has to pee. today ive started just asking her every now and then if she has to go, to kind of stay on top of it. also, yesterday evening while on the potty she was complaining that her "pee hurts". but today, she hasn't complained about it anymore.

is this normal?

  • I was told by our ped that they can regress after about 6-8 mos. It is normal. You just have to get them back on track. Use a kitchen timer and set if for an hour and take her to sit on the potty and set it for 5 min. Once she has shown that she can be proficient then slowly decrease how often you take her to the potty and decrease how long you make her sit. If she pees let her get up. If she doesn't then make her sit the whole time. This worked my DD when we potty trained and when I had to re-train my 6 yo niece when school let out this year (she was never fully potty trained--had accidents daily and wouldn't tell anyone or lie about it). All fixed in 2-3 days. Good luck!!!
