A woman owns a young dog that gets pregnant without her owners knowledge. The dog is only seven months old and not emotionally ready to care for the pups. She gives birth to six puppies in the yard while her owners are away and doesn’t know what is happening to her or what to do. Over an hour after the first puppy is born, the cord is still attached and the pup hasn’t been cleaned. Then, from underneath the house, appears a stray tabby cat. She chews the cord, cleans the puppy and stays with the mother until she delivers all six pups, cleaned by the cat. When the owners arrive home, they find the mother dog trembling in her dog house and the cat lying with the puppies, letting them suckle on her. The owner goes inside to get a basket for the puppies and comes back outside to find them gone. After searching for several minutes, she finds them underneath the house where the cat had taken them in a nest with the cats own three kittens. She brought all of the babies inside and made a comfortable bed for the cat to raise her babies, all nine of them. The mother dog rejected her litter and refused to even come in the house while they were there. The owners bottle fed the puppies and allowed the mother cat to raise them and, when they were old enough, they found homes for five of the puppies and two of the kittens, keeping one pup and one kitten. The mother dog was fixed after she rejected the puppies and they had the mother cat fixed after all of her children, and adopted babies, were weaned.
Three weeks later, however, they found the cat underneath the house with three black lab puppies. Her owner found out that one of their neighbor’s dogs had had a litter but had rejected them. With the owner’s permission, they allowed the cat to raise the puppies and they fed them with the milk the owner’s provided. When they were weaned, the mother’s owners found them homes. It soon became very apparent that the cat, appropriately named “Mommy Kitty”, had a talent for finding babies in need of a mommy. Five months after the lab pups were gone, Mommy Kitty brought home a litter of six, two week old kittens and her owners found the mother dead in the road along with one of the kittens and they assumed that she was hit while carrying a kitten across the road. A year and a half later, she brought home two stray newborn puppies that had been thrown out by irresponsible owners. In the ten years that they owned Mommy Kitty, she raised five litters of orphaned kittens, four litters of orphaned puppies, a litter of bunnies, a baby bird, and an orphaned raccoon, in addition to her own kittens. The true test, however, was when her owners took in an 18 month old foster child and Mommy Kitty embraced him with the love that every mother understands.
Mommy Kitty embodies the maternal spirit that so many humans lack. Her compassion and love for children that are not her own, that aren’t even her own species, should be a lesson for all of mankind and will touch the hearts of all of those who raise babies that they didn’t give birth to.
