Lego Building Sets

Does anyone else dislike the Lego building sets that have come out in recent years? So far, I haven't bought any for my daughter, but my stepson has had them. Frankly, they're depressing. He methodically follows the directions and builds one specific spaceship or airplane out of each set, and that's it. When my brother and sister and I were growing up, my brother had a great big plastic bucket filled with blocks of all colors, shapes, and sizes. We could, and did, literally make anything from them. Sometimes we fashioned men, women, and children with different colored clothes, and furniture to fix them a house. Other times, we made buildings and vehicles that came from our own creative minds, not from some step-by-step guide the company put together. No wonder we complain that kids don't use their imaginations.

  • Our boys have sets, but they still make different things other than what's on the box. My Husband made them lego boards, and then they can build things and leave them on it, and they won't get mixed up with other stuff. I think they require a lot of thinking, and concentrating, which is good for them. IMO it's better for them to do that than stare at a screen all day playing games...

  • We've had several of those sets. They all end up in the lego bin, where the boys and their friends make whatever imaginary thing they are thinking about.

  • I love the sets. After he has built it once he throws those legos in with the rest and then builds whatever he wants to build. Sometimes he will build the set again and sometimes he will make his own. I do wish I could find just a big bucket of legos because I am sure that would be cheaper, but the sets don't bother me.

  • My 12 yo loves them. He puts together the star wars ship or whatever, but then he plays with it (well, he used to, now he "collects"). We also have a huge bin of just Legos though that didn't come with any set. You can still buy the tub without a specific set.

  • DS who is 7, has lots of legos. When it comes as a set, he builds it, plays with it, then takes it apart to make a zillion other things. He builds quite complex stuff! Its fun to watch him build. He will watch utube "how to build____" videos, then go make it.

  • My daughter has 3 of those rectangle bucket things of Legos that have instruction booklets telling you things you can make and she has 4-5 sets of Lego Friends where all parts fit together to make one or two specific things.

BUT...my DD mixes them all together and makes whatever she wants.

  • DS loves to get the sets, built whatever is on the box and then promptly take it all apart and use them as he likes. Some kids just really like keeping the models together. If you don't want to spend the money on Lego's (because let's face it, they are expensive) maybe look into age appropriate models. My brother loved putting those things together.

  • Nope. Love 'em in our house. Both my son and daughter have a long list of sets they lust after. Birthdays, holidays, saving up their money from chores - there's always a Lego set invovled. They build them. They create fantastic stories around them. They take them apart and make them "better." they take them apart and make new things. They take them apart and rebuild. My son loves the Bionicles and Hero Factory sets. Some he leaves as is. Some he takes apart and creates brand new figures - of those, he'll get his grandfather to help him photograph his creations and then upload them to the gallery of creations on the Lego site dedicated to those sets. He puts a lot into creating the coolest, most creative Bionicles he can so he can get more votes on the site. :) Their favorite store is the Lego store. They get the plastic buckets and load up on all the lose Legos they can. Love. It.

  • My son (12) has those but will make other things with them. In fact, he's made a Lego DS (figured out how to do that on his own)and downloaded videos from youtube on how to make other things. Has make Mario Kart vehicles, a light house for his grandmother and other things. It's funny, he hadn't played with them for a while but about a month ago he stared again.
