  • My husband initially joined up for a 6 year enlisted (USAF) so he could be A1C right out of basic. Each of his enlistments since have been for 4 years.

  • While you can choose to do anywhere from 2-6 years depending on the branch, you actually enlist for 8 years. The remainder of your time left of the 8 years is spent in IRR (inactive reserve readiness). My husband signed up to do 3 1/2 years of active duty and then got out. He was out for a year and was then called back into duty. He joined in February 2002 and his official last day of being under the military's control was February 2010.
