While you can choose to do anywhere from 2-6 years depending on the branch, you actually enlist for 8 years. The remainder of your time left of the 8 years is spent in IRR (inactive reserve readiness). My husband signed up to do 3 1/2 years of active duty and then got out. He was out for a year and was then called back into duty. He joined in February 2002 and his official last day of being under the military's control was February 2010.
My MOS had only a spot to enlist available with a 4 yr contract when I went in.
