4 Bumps

What is the worst thing you ever did at a place of employment?

When I was 14 1/2 I worked a 77 hour week one summer in a concession trailer in a soccer field, absolutely lost and forgotten by management and since I was so young, they didn't even give me a walkie talkie so I never got potty or rest or meal breaks (DON'T ask where I pee'd)

Anyways it was a soda concession trailer and this was the days before online and text codes under bottle caps. It either said loser or winner of a free 20oz pop. During the time of days I knew I'd be busy and pop wouldn't go flat I went thru and opened at least 200 bottles, moving caps around and pocketing all the winners. As for the drinks I didn't have caps for, I'd simply encourage the athletes to pour it directly into their waterbottles. I didn't feel bad then, but I do now! (15+ yrs later)

  • When I was 19, I worked at an injection plastic factory. The worst part of it was making the hand pieces for pay phones. There were copper inserts that you had to put in, close the machine, let the plastic inject in, open it, bang the shit out of them to get the inserts out, and do it over again. If you weren't moving fast enough, an alarm would sound every time the machine was open too long. I worked the night shift and I was on that machine from about 2 am until 7 am. I was banging the shit out of the stupid pieces of plastic and those inserts were so hard to get out. My wrists were killing me, the alarm kept sounding over and over. It was horrible. I left that morning and swore I would never go back there. I quit and got a job the next day working at the front desk of a hotel. That was a job I loved!

  • eh..when i had my first job at a chain-salon, a mother/daughter came in for perms..they were 'on sale' in the first place. the daughter had long hair, and it was when spiral perms were just coming out, so her's was an extra charge.
they came in the very next day, citing damage and ruination, and demanding refunds. i was livid. there was not one damn thing wrong with either's service/hair, and it was obvious, too, just by looking at their hair. any dumbass could tell they were lying and only wanted free perms.
the manager, as managers often will, refunded their money. i stood right there, job be-damned, and said, ''i hear there's a sale on Levis over in the misses department. this should buy you both at least 3 pairs of new jeans each!''. i didn't care if i got fired or not, i was pissed.
    i didn't get fired.
but, it taught me a big lesson in how to deal with the public..the customer IS NOT always right. screw 'em.

  • I"ve worked drunk and I've worked on acid.

both were supposed to be my days off, and in both cases my supervisor knew my condition.

I was cashier in a gift shop when I worked drunk, a hotel maid when I was coming down from acid.

  • Dull, I worked at a four star resort. some idiot came in one night, showing off for his friends, and ordered shots of "your finest grappa" all around without asking how much it was.

    it's $35 a shot.

predictibly, this guy threw a big shit fit when presented with the bill, and wound up getting the charges for the grappa removed.

and the really annoying thing is there was no policy change to tell the guests what pricey stuff cost, because it might "offend" someone.

"someone" needs to be prepared to pay for what they so cavalierly order. had I been the manager, he would have paid or I'd have called the cops.

  • The customer is not always right, screw em'. EXACTLY DULL. That's why I cannot work in any kind of customer service/ retail job.

Probably worst thing I ever did on the job was the day I spent the entire 8 hours sitting at my desk playing on/in Answers. Didn't process one piece of paper. I did answer the phone but kept the conversations as short as possible. (That happened about 2 years ago).
Years ago I used to wait tables. Occasionally I would hang a ticket, get the order, and eat it. Throw the ticket away. At the end of the shift it would just show as a missing ticket. FREE FOOD FOR ME. (This was long before they even thought about cameras in the workplace)

  • I guess the worst would be going to work high a few times in college. But, honestly, it never affected my job performance.
