Can a dress size 14 be taken in to a size 6??

How long would this typically take?!? Its a simple black dress. Nothing fancy.

Thanks!

  • That's a huge size difference. Armholes are cut differently, for a size six than a size 14. Bustlines can be quite different. Really it would depend on the style of the dress. It might be doable, but it would probably take a skilled seamstress.

  • Definite can only be done by a professional seamstress, and will cost more than buying another dress.

  • It would probably coast just as much to take in, as you going out and buying a new black dress.

  • ^^ What they said. It isn't just a simple matter of cinching the waist or adding a few darts.

  • that's a big difference- they will probably have to take the whole thing apart to do it and make it look right. Might as well just get a new one- I can't imagine it would be cheap to have done

  • It would have to be completely taken apart and remade.

If you are having it done it would depend on how many things they have on the table to complete. If someone were devoting 8 hours day on this one out fit I would give a week and be prepared to have to come in for fittings. It is an extremely drastic and costly alteration (if you are having it done)

  • Anything's possible. Can you talk to a local seamstress? That reminds me of a blog I found the other day... the girl goes to thrift stores and buys virtually anything. She alters shirts, dresses, etc. into something she will wear. She had one new item for every day of the year.

  • Taking a dress down four sizes is pretty much making a new dress out of the old dress' fabric, so it's a MAJOR job.
