How much $ would you give your child when going on vacation with another family?

My DD is going to the beach with her Best friend and their family. She is 10. How much spending money should i give her? They invited her to go, a friend says if they invited her, i don't need to give her any money. But i feel bad if they have to pay for everything for her...

  • How many days is she going for? I would say if they are going for a weekend, $40 or so, that way if they wont take it, at least she has spending money for things if they go into ice cream shops or little stores where she sees something she wants etc.

  • it would depend on where they were going an how long they would be gone. The beach certainly makes things a little less expensive. I would plan on about $10-$15 / day. Or you could just give her parents about $50 for some of the expenses and give her a little bit of spending money (like $10-$20). If they didn't say anything about money when they asked you if she could come then it might not be expected, but I'm sure it would be appreciated.

  • We just brought 2 kids with us for a weeks vacation. One was my niece - 13, one was my son's friend - 17. My niece gave $200. The friend brought $120. Both parents insisted we keep it. We bought my niece a couple of t- shirts and went on a bunch of rides and out to dinner a lot. I would say for 5 days give the parents at least $100.

  • if it was for a week..i would probably give the parents a hundred bucks to hold on to for her and tell them if she wants anything or if they are allowing their kids to souvenier shop then she can purchase something with that money

  • I would talk to the family about meals & at least offer to give them $$ for meals. I would send at least $10 a day for spending money, a little more if I had it in the budget.

  • My sister ( at that time 14) went to her friend's beach house for a week. We gave her $100. They paid for her food and stuff (although we had instructed her to pay for herself but she said her friend's parents wouldn't let her). But they let her pay for her own shopping. She bought a few tshirts and a couple of toiletries from bath and body works. She spent less than $50 and bought rest of the money back. We gave a gift to the family as a thankyou

  • The friend that brought $120 kept his own money and bought a few things. Then when his mother picked him up she asked him how much he had left. She gave it all to us. I said no of course, I felt a little weird, but she insisted.
