Valedictorian denied diploma
Oklahoma student's father says she won't apologize for using the word 'hell' in high school commencement speech
Personally if my daughter did this I would encourage her to apologize. This is one of those decisions that could impact the rest of her life. So not worth it.
I would ask her to apologize to whomever necessary in order to get that diploma. She went to school and deserves her diploma. I'm not agreeing she should be denied her diploma because of what she said. I just wouldn't want to see my child go on in life with only a GED because she didn't receive her diploma for one word.

No, I do not think she should apologize. At this point in time- the diploma itself is merely a piece of paper. She is progressing with her education.
We are after all talking about a graduating class full of 17-18+ yo. It is a word, it was used in a colloquialism and it was not meant to be gratuitous, shocking or attention seeking.
The Principal should ummm, perhaps, IDK- grow up?

My first reaction was to question the context, however I quickly realized that she earned the diploma and they have no right to keep it from her. I think she should apologize if she wants to but I would proceed with legal action for them to fork over what I had earned.

In what context what the word used? Is it a private or Catholic school? I guess those things factor into my answer. It stinks that she will have to learn at such a young age to "play the game" in order to get what she so rightfully worked so hard for.

Next question overall
If you are poor, do you get mad when people can afford nicer things then you?
