Voter ID laws - Why Do Many Minorities Lack ID?

From the Article:

The Justice Department notified the commonwealth of Virginia on Monday night that it would not object to its new voter ID law. The Virginia requirement is just the latest such law at the center of a heated debate leading up to the 2012 election, with Republicans generally supporting the laws as a means to prevent voter fraud, while Democrats allege that the laws will disenfranchise minorities, who less often have valid IDs. Why do minorities have fewer IDs?

Because a lot of minorities don’t have much use for them. The most common voter ID is a driver’s license, and minorities are less likely to drive. A 2007 study found that in California, New Mexico, and Washington, whites were more likely to have driver’s licenses than nonwhites. In Orange County, Calif., about 92 percent of white voters had driver’s licenses, compared with only 84 percent of Latino voters and 81 percent of “other” voters. A 2005 study of Wisconsin similarly found that while about 80 percent of white residents had licenses, only about half of African-American and Hispanic residents had licenses.

  • Because it costs money to get a driver's license. In NJ to get a learner's permit at 16 you have to take a behind the wheel course with a licensed instructor, which runs about $400. In my dd high school many blacks and hispanics can't afford the $400 so they have to wait until they are 17 to get a learner's permit. Many families don't even have cars, so why even bother.

The USA does not require federal ID like they had in Pre-war Germany. It is against the constitution. You don't need papers to take a walk in your town or anywhere. In pre-war Germany you needed ID papers when you left your house.

  • Everytime I see this I wonder how those same people function in other areas of their lives without ID. I am asked to show ID in a number of places: returning an item to Walmart without the receipt, last week at the food pantry, signing up for unemployment, was also asked when speaking to a rep about home refinance, filling out an application at the local school district office for substituting,, once even asked for ID when I purchased a pack of cigs for my 42 year old child...I was floored. I'm 62 CLEARLY obvious.

  • A state photo I'd is cheaper than a drivers license and under some of the new laws they are actually free as long as it's just a state I'd. Drivers licenses have different fees.
I was carded at Target when I was buying a can of compressed air to clean my keyboard and electronics. Been carded when buying OTC cold meds for the kids. I have to provide photo I'd when I take my kids to the doctor or dentist. I have been asked for my I'd at my bank when I was cashing a check. I guess my bank card wasn't enough, and while some people might think that's overdoing it, I appreciate that someone is taking time to make sure that I am who I say I am.

  • But in NJ you can obtain a non-driver's photo ID from the NJDMV for $24. Handicap non-driver's over the age of 17 may get an ID card for $6. My NJ town issues resident ID cards (I do think they are photo) for $24 first time and $14 to renew. Our town also issues township, photo ID cards for no cost to seniors over the age of 62 so they can access the township beaches at no cost.

Not having need of a driver's license is not an excuse. My doctor recommends I take Mucinex-D when I get a cold or my allergies flare because otherwise I'm fairly certain to develop a sinus infection. Every time I have to go buy Mucinex-D I have to show my PHOTO ID. When I cash a check (my GS troop account) I have to show photo ID. When I deposit my paycheck in the bank and retain some of the funds for myself, I show photo ID.

I really don't understand how adults function without ID today.

  • Some minorities, have the mistaken belief that if they had no ID's, and if they committed a crime in the past, the cops wouldn't know it. They figure they can give the name of a cousin or whatever, the cops will just accept that and go on their merry way. I came across that scenario plenty of times. And I never failed to roll my eyes., Our state police have a fingerprint ID system in their cars. And all they have to do is press the guy/girl's thumb onto this device and in about 1 or 2 minutes, a picture and their name will pop up if they claim to have no ID. And its not a violation of their civil rights. Law enforcement in AZ need this!

  • At work we have clients who have lost an ID or let it expire due to being in jail, caught up in paying court fees, loss of job, other situations.

So than they have to start all over and not having proof of where they live, cannot find birth certficate, no money to get what is needed to get a new ID, and somehow not one friend or family member to help them but somehow without a job, they can keep their cell phone turned on.

  • there is a such thing as a non DL ID. im assuming these ppl with out IDs dont get medicaid/care, disability, food stamps, WIC, tanif, go to school, use banks, rent their dwelling, buy alcohol/cigs/spray paint/ or a number of other items, and many other things. or at least they shouldnt if they have no photo ID.

maybe local agencies could have a "free ID day" and allow those w/ expired licenses or SS cards to get a picture ID at no cost...or very low cost.
