Asthma in adults

I been having trouble breathing ever since my 12 month old was 5 months old I went to have a breathing test done yesterday and today they told me I have asthma. 30 years old and have asthma. They have me an inhaler that I take in the morning and night then another one as needed. I have a 7,4and 1 year old. I go back in 6 weeks for a follow up. But I know nothing about asthma. I don't smoke dh does I already told him he isn't smoking around me anymore lol. I have a 7 year old black lab/shepeard mix than I have a cat as well she is about 10 or so years old. Do I have to dust daily? I have so much stuff if I have to do it daily I will be cleaning 24/7 lol

  • I also first got asthma at 30. I was pregnant, but I never had it before. (I had a cat for 5 years at that point) I was on a daily inhaler, but once my cat died, 10 years later, my asthma doesn't bother me anymore, only when I'm around cats.

  • I've had asthma for most of my life. It definitely got worse when I acquired cats and dogs, and oddly it's worse with dogs rather than the cats. I take a daily dose of Symbicort and life is usually pretty good. I have 3 kiddos and I can do pretty much anything I want activity wise.

The only time I have real problems is when I let the cleaning get away from me. I dust 2-3 times a week and sweep daily (no carpets, which helps a lot.)Or if I get a cold. Last year I had a slight cold which turned into pneumonia because no one helped with the dusting and sweeping.

  • My asthma has actually gotten worse as I have gotten older. I remember, though, that my grandma was the same way, eventually developing CHF. I take it seriously. I am on Singulair which seems to really help me.

  • I've had it since I was little...I think it depends on the person how vigilant you will have to be with cleaning and whatnot- I mean obviously, you don't want the house full of dog hair and dust...but you don't necessarily have to clean every single day either
stay away from freshly cut grass- at least that's what I was told - weeds and cats kill me-but I think it's more allergies than actual athsma- since I was fine with cats growing up...but as an adult I can't deal with being around them for long.

if you take your meds-you should be ok. I have been on advair for like 9 yrs or so- and had almost no issues at all since I was put on it

  • Yes, Advair, I couldn't remember the name. That's what I took. It was like a miracle.
