Did you have a 12 Week PAPPA Test/ Serum Integrated Screening?

This is a a blood test that test for Down Syndrome, Trisomy 18, and Open Neural Tube Defects. Apparently this is a test that was automatically done and paid for by my insurance with my previous 2 pregnancies. Insurance no longer pays for this which makes it an elective test for $225. My next appointment would be the testing if I decide to do it. I heard there are a lot of false positives but I will be researching this before we make the decision. Did you have the test done??

  • I believe it was called the Triple Screen when I had it, and yes I did. I don't know about "a lot" of false positives, but I do know they told me I needed an amnio afterward because it indicated my oldest would had DS. We had the amnio, and he's now a perfectly healthy 11 yr old with a mouth that won't quit. :) Had I known that what happened to us would happen, I might have elected not to do it. But I don't know that I would ever tell someone else that they should or shouldn't, because it is different for everyone.

  • I denied it both times as I have never had a family history of any of those conditions nor were my pregnancies as I was older or approaching menopause (in fact I still have a ways to go). Nor was there anything in my pregnancy to indicate it might be a factor. So unless you are concerned due to age, family history, or how the previous two pregnancies went I wouldn't bother.

  • I didn't with my first 2 since this is a fairly new test, but I did with this one. I had talked to my dr. and we agreed that she wouldn't notify me, unless it was something like a cardiac disorder. You also have your quad screening around 18 weeks, along with the anatomy scan, to check and double check the results. That is why I felt, I didn't need to know at 12 weeks. This is just my opinion, and our insurance did cover it. I don't think I would have had it, had ours not covered it.

  • I had the blood test done with my oldest because I didn't really know what they were doing, I just did it because it was "routine". All was fine. With my second I declined all testing and now with my 3rd they scheduled me for it.... but I am calling to cancel, so I will be declining with this one too. I will not terminate so might as well be happy and have faith that God will take care of everything.

  • I declined. Healthy child. I didn't see the point because I knew if it was positive, I wouldn't choose to follow up with an amnio (risk of miscarriage and invasive) and even if the amnio was positive for one of these, I wouldn't choose termination. So, the only benefit to knowing would be heavy research before my child was born. I felt that wasn't worth it to research and stress about a positive triple screen for several different conditions when it might be a false positive and that if we did have a child with one of these, we would be able to research after he or she was born.
