  • I don't do a formal back to school shopping trip. As teens they don't need much. I buy as I/they need not because someone tells me to.

  • Too much. If I had known that most of what I bought for my daughter would be dumped into bins then I would have been more selective. I spent over $200 on all three of them. At open house, her notebooks, crayons, glue, pencils, etc were put in plastic containers for distribution. I'm not stingy by any means, but I don't like spending twice what I normally should on supplies for the whole class. I'm sure there are other parents like this. However, I will follow the dreaded list but that doesn't mean I will like it. Times are hard not just for those who need supplies but those who are buying them.

  • As little as possible. We get cheap supplies (Crayola is always cheaper on sale than generic brands, for one example - cheap doesn't always mean cheap, I just watch the sales!) and minimal clothing, reuse backpacks for as long as possible. For 4 kids I think we spent $300 this year, but they all got more than 1 pair of shoes to start the year which we normally don't do.
