CONCORD, N.C. (AP) — Thousands of people lined up for 500 jobs that will start when a new indoor water park and resort opens next month in North Carolina.

The Independent Tribune of Concord and Kannapolis reports that nearly 4,000 people showed up Thursday to apply for jobs at Great Wolf Lodge near Charlotte.

Curtis Brown with Great Wolf Resorts attributed some of the turnout to the bad economy. Brown says the company usually interviews about 5,000 applicants over three days before a new resort opens. Interviews were to continue Friday and Saturday.

The Wisconsin company is hiring in departments from housekeeping and front desk to spa services.

North Carolina has nearly 400,000 unemployed workers. The jobless rate was 8.7 percent in December, the highest since 1983.

  • Not everyone can save. There are many of our fellow Americans who are hand to mouth. This isn't a question about YOU persay but I am guessing it is in general.

  • Yeah I can afford it. We have season passes in fact for Carowinds which is also in Charlotte. We go every year and dont plan on stopping anytime soon. Its cheaper for us then going to Hawaii or something.

  • Oh I know, we have a Great Wolf Lodge here in Grapevine Texas. The rooms START at $200 per night and you HAVE to lodge there to even get into the waterpark. You can't just pay to use the waterpark, you have to pay to lodge there..........SO, I agree OP, how can these folks even afford it with that high of an unemployment rate, who is going to go there? Seems crazy to me!
