Sick fish. Any idea what it could be?

I goggled it, but there are a million different answers. My Afican Cichlid has white stuff all over him. My catfish just died and had the same thing. He's not eating either.

We introduced 2 sucker fish 2 weeks ago. Could they have given the tank something? I need to figure out a treatment for him. Dd is so upset. She's had him a long time.

Any ideas?

  • My guess would be ick
There is a liquid you put in the water repeatedly to kill it. IF all the fish die be sure you thoroughly sanitize the tank and everything in it with boiling water and then allowing everything to get absolutely dried out. Ick is nasty stuff that is either brought into the tank by a new fish or due to stressful conditions.
You will want to do at least a 10% water change and raise the tank temerature a bit even before you go to the pet store.

  • Is the white stuff spots? If so, my first guess would be ich. Most fist stores sell medication for it.

  • It is called "the ich". Scroll all the way down for treatment options. I bet it came from the sucker fish.

Hope your little fishy friend makes a full recovery.

  • Did you take the sucker fish out? I'd take them back to the pet store with a sample of your water and tell them all your expensive fish are dying.
