How much oppression has state atheism caused?

I know, I know, you're a peaceable folk. But what do you have to say about the history of oppression in atheist regimes?

  • "Atheism is the lack of belief in the existence of any gods. How can that possibly describe a government? There can be secular governments, like ours is supposed to be, but there really can't (by definition) be an "atheist regime"."

Sure it can. Just as there can be a Muslim regime or a Catholic regime. A secular regime gives no preference to any belief system, it doesn't promote any religion to create its laws or makes a particular religion the "official" one. When a government promotes Athrusts ideals to the point of trying to eliminate all religion from the country (as is the case of the Atheist regimes of China, the former USSR, Mongolia, North Korea, etc) then that country is under an Atheist regime. It's really not such a difficult concept to understand, but I can see how Atheists would try to deny it when one of their objections to religion is the violence and intolerance it has inspired.

  • The same thing as I do the history of oppression in Chirsitan, Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, etc. "regimes". Of course it also depends on what you mean by "regime" as Atheism has no set principles or doctrines which guide them. There is only ONE factor in Atheism and that is a belief that there Is no God/are no gods. Period. Theocratic regimes however have whole sets of rules doctrines and principles which dictate the way they might run their regime. So I wold imagine that a theocratic regime is a far more oppressive than one that has no set doctrines.

  • How could it be doctrinally "Atheist" when atheism has no doctrines? Communist perhaps, but communism is not the same thing as Atheism anymore than Republicanism is the same as Catholicism. One is a religion the other is political.

  • Atheism had nothing to do with the oppressiveness of the USSR. There have been many oppressive governments, and many of them have been religious.

  • Tell that to Marx and Lenin

You're thinking Communism dearie, it's not the same thing as Atheism, no matter how hard you stomp your feet and whine that it is.

  • Women are being forcibly sterilized and forced to have abortions. Families are being punished for having more than one child.

This has nothing to do with Atheism.

  • Next can we play how much oppression has state femaleness caused? Maybe after that we can go for how much oppression has state nearsighted caused?

Some people really need to learn the difference between an organization and an adjective.

  • "I would say that the Chinese are horribly oppressed by the atheist government. Women are being forcibly sterilized and forced to have abortions. Families are being punished for having more than one child. "

This is the result of overpopulation in the country, not atheism. Even if it WAS due to atheism, is it any worse than the christian right-wingers trying to force women in THIS country to have pregnancies they DON'T want?

Also, you're right, some of the world's most notorious leaders have been atheist. That said, they were evil men who were atheist, not evil B/C they were atheist. OTOH, the holocaust, Salem Witch Trials, Inquisition, Crusades, and Protestant burnings under Queen Mary Tudor were all the result of the leader's particular religion, or the religion of the time in the case of the witch trials. Religious doctorine is far more opressive and deadly than non-religious.
