Can you have a congested and runny nose for a month and not be sick?

As well as soare throat in the a.m. without being sick? My 10 year old has been blowing his nose for weeks (piles of tissues everywhere) and this morning has a sore throat. He tends to feel better as the day goes on, has no fever either. I don't know what to do.

  • sounds like allergies, there is allergy meds out there for kids.

  • Definately sounds like an allergy. The sore throat may be from either blowing his nose so much for so long or from post-nasal drip from all of the congestion. If it is really bothersome for him, then you may want to have him tested to see what exactly he's allergic/sensitive to, then go from there. Not all allergy medications treat the same types of allergies, even though the symptoms are mostly the same, so it is really best to know what is bothering him before trialing medications. He may need a prescription allergy medication or you may be able to just give him an OTC med, but either way, he should be checked first by a doctor (allergy/asthma specialist preferably, not just a general pediatrician).

  • my almost 4 year old doesnt have a sore throat, but she does wake up coghing every morning then gets better throughout the day and she has a runny nose a lot. She has allergies. So he probably has allergies. My daughter takes zertec and singular

  • Sore throat is most likely from post nasal drip. Sounds like he may have allergies. I would have him looked at for sure.

  • I wanted to point out that there is a nasty sinus infection that has been going around all winter. Myself and my kids (2 of which don't have allergies) have had the same symptoms for almost two months. Ask your doctor for flonase. It will help with both the allergies and this type of sinus infection.

  • Yes, my son has been going through this for the last 7 years. He has allergies.

  • FYI: anon at 4:52 -- sinus infections are not contagious.

Allergies could do that. I have cronic sinusitis and get those symptoms. I'm not sick, just my sinus become inflamed (probably due to allergies) and everything goes haywire after that.
