Would it really be that bizarre a conspiracy theory?

Lower level pubs have been making some absolutely egregious comments lately. There's the slavery had a good side guy, the women's bodies reject the sperm in a real rape guy, the it's ok to kill kids because the Bible says so guy, now there's the "easy to rape" guy.

These are just the ones getting major, national headlines. There's the one from PA who thinks birth control is a tragedy equivalent to 9/11 and Pearl Harbor. The Texas pub party platform states this is a Christian nation in 4 different clauses, stating an intention to focus education and policy towards the "christianization" of the state. Virginia has the guy who says disabled children are "God's punishment" for women who get abortions. Illinois pubs publicly stated they would not pass an anti-bullying measure because it might make voters see them as "pro-homosexual". They also have claim to the mental giant who stated on tv, in a video picked up around the world, that all Muslims are trying to kill Americans. Missouri pubs amended their state constitution this year to allow students to refuse to do any homework assignment in any subject, simply by saying it's against their religion, and the school cannot hold it agaisnt them.

So here's the crazy part, except maybe not so crazy. What are the chances there is someone (or several someones) higher up in the party trying to destroy it from the inside - giving the party endorsement to these jackasses, knowing full well they are so choc full of crazy they shouldn't be allowed to walk the street, let alone represent anyone in a state or national congress? Is it just me, or is that slightly more believable than all these independent instances of psychotic being spontaneously chosen above other, more rational, candidates around the country?

Maybe a conspiracy theory is a bit desperate, but if that's not the case, WHO is electing these idiots, and WHY? You can't make a generalized statement that republicans are bible banging idiots, because the vast majority of republicans I know are interested in fiscal issues, not religious ones. The elected people are not representing the people of their party, so how do they keep getting the job?

Interresting thought. It would be like having a mole(s) infiltrating from other countries with an agenda. Not really thatoff the wall but then again not that plausible either. It is interesting to think about. Because the lack of plausibility might just make it more doable. HMMMM

My first thought was Dr. Evil croaking out one million dollars. Honestly, who knows - corporate interests whose main priority is keeping people distracted with petty social issue bs, foreign investment who don't want anyone noticing how much money is really being injected - both sides are in on that, but for the past 2 years (which is when most of this crazy has been bubbling to the surface) it's been a republican house handling those negotiations. When the dems were in the driver's seat, we got lots of news about affairs and dem-flavored corruption.

It's not like this is something I've seriously thought out and mapped, but the crazy seems to be getting thicker, so I have to wonder if there's a reason.

if true, its very very smart and must have taken a long long time. personally, i think it has more to do with the economy. historically, when the economy is bad ppl start to cling to what they have and it seems to always be race & religion. i think the GOP has given up on minorities and non-Christian voters, and now they are trying to get the fundamentalist Christians out to vote. unfortunately, since the majority of these ppl are not as Christian as they pretend to be, they say what they think fundies think...which is usually bat shit crazy & wrong.

i think the true fiscal conservatives would be better off calling themselves something else b/c if this keeps up the GOP will become "that crazy party of the bigoted old ppl" and a label most rational ppl wont want to be tied to.

i think the GOP has given up on minorities and non-Christian voters, and now they are trying to get the fundamentalist Christians out to vote.

Which is bizarre in itself, since it's a constantly shrinking demographic.

I think the fundies actually think that Jesus is actually coming back REALLY soon (Dec 21st perhaps?) and that they need to have their ducks in a row. SMH

The fundies may be shrinking, but a) they have money, b) a lot of churches to spread their political agenda, c) are organized, d) will vote, and e) will cry loud and hard when they feel wronged. It would be very hard to sway them from the GOP, but abandoning them could spell disaster to the party.

I don't really have an opinion on the conspiracy, but I agree with okmanders that religion and race are always big factors in a bad economy. People become more divided and taking sides. Politicians say what they think the voters want to hear. We don't know how batshit crazy they really are until after the elections are over and it's too late. When reelection comes around again, people forget that craziness, or don't trust the mudslinging from the other side pointing it out.

like my DH said, several times in the last years, this Republican party is NOT the party our fathers belonged to..or my mother, for that matter.
likewise, i've heard lifelong Dems say the same about their own party.
i read somewhere yesterday, some friend of a friend of a friend on FB (maybe?) wrote that ''today's 'new' voters want zingers and feel good moments'' as opposed to being waist-deep in the real issues of whatever the platform/cause is. they want instant AHA!s and to get a good belly laugh at the Other Guy. its a very immature take on reality, and sober thinking has become a thing of the past.
in other words, these are the voters of today. (i'm sure the whole context of what she said is lost on those of you reading this, but i didn't care to c/p the whole FB post.)
