101.4 fever in 8 year old. when do I need to worry? Like 103?

I caved and gave him Children's Advil because he's miserable and the sore throat is nasty too. But at what point do I need the ER if it goes up? I can't remember! Thanks!

  • 101-103. It depends on age and other symptoms. You can always call urgent care centers and ask them. They'd probably answer that for free. Some of those 24 hour nurse lines might try to verify you as a member, but just pretend you can't find your member info.

  • My Dr. always told me to call him at 103 and head to the ER at 104
    Different kids, different needs though.
Has the doctor seen him for his sore throat? If so what did he say was the cause?
If not is it just red or with blister like things, swollen glands?
Also I just remembered something else he said and that is if the eyes get glassy go to the ER.
As long as he is drinking fluids he will probably be fine.

  • thank you. throat doesn't look like strep and isn't particularly red but he is complaining like crazy. He hasn't gone in yet since I figured it was just a virus but maybe I have to, he's miserable and it's only been 24 hours. He is drinking and eating a bit. I'll keep an eye out for the 103 and reassess in the morning.
