What do I pay a sitter?

I am taking a class twice a week for 4 hours each. I have a different sitter for each night. I have 2 children, one 13 and one 8, but really only the 8 yr old will need watching. The hours would be 515 til around 945 at night. Any ideas? I asked both girls and they said whatever I saw fit to pay them.I need a ballpark please...

  • $5 an hour is normal. considering it's just shy of minimum wage...

that would be 22.50 a night, or you could round up to $25.

  • I don't know about where you are. Here in San Antonio I can't get a sitter for less than $6 bucks an hour. some are as much as $8. The best ones are $8-9 an hour.

  • I think high school students would probably be paid less than college students also...

  • GrnEyedGrandma...I have heard that it is that expensive other places. I only pay $20 - $25 for 1 child to have someone watch her all day. I would never be able to have a sitter if it was $9/hr!!!!

  • Sry, I live in a small, 20000, college town. These are both college girls from my old sorority house when I went there.

There's a rate calculator based on what other moms are paying their kids. I think you can also add in the sitter's age and experience level into the calculator.

  • 10 years ago, I would make $10 an hour (that is not what I asked for, but rather what was offered) on Long Island, in the ritzier neighborhoods. I haven't babysat someone else's kids for cash in about that long.
