What is a Apostate?

My friend who is a JW mentioned that an old friend of hers turned "apostate". What exactly does that term mean?

  • Like Im considered an apostate because I knowingly left the church of my "youth".

It's deeper than leaving a religious organization: apostate is leaving God. Denouncing God.

  • Ya. pp is right.
Its usually referring to someone who has fallen away from their church or faith.

Ive never heard it used outside of christian based faiths though, but I suppose its used in non-christian faiths too.

  • I always thought it was someone who left one religion or denomination for another, specifically. However I have never looked the word up, I've only read it.
