Wood stove dumping smoke into the house when starting a fire?

It's just when we are first starting a fire, all the flues are open and we cleaned the chimney pipe and took the wood stove out and cleaned it all out. The smoke isn't going up properly and I don't know why? Once the fire is burning it goes up.

  • Is the wood well-seasoned, and the damper in the open position?

  • I personally didn't take it out, SO did. It's a pipe that goes into a hole- the pipe is back in the hole- I'm guessing it's right? I can ask him if there's anything he could have done wrong, but it was smoking before we took it apart.

  • Does the stove have a vent at the bottom? It sounds like it may be closed--it should be wide open when you start the fire.

  • we have a chimney heater and when we dont use it the chimney will dump smoke into the house untill it warms up. Ours is a large double sided stone fireplace so it can take toolong to heat up

  • You need to create an updraft... as Nannie B said open the bottom vent or roll up some paper, light it and hold it at the base of the pipe for a moment, then light the fire.

  • :) Thanks for the tips. The bottom vent should be open- doesn't seem to make a difference which way we turn it (hi or lo) it still doesn't do much. We've been burning for about a month now. So light paper and hold it inside the wood stove at the top where the pipe is?
