Can you get a Mirena if your Breastfeeding?

So I went to the Dr today for my 6week check up. She gave me my options, the mini pill (which I got pregnant on), condoms, or in 10 weeks I could have the Mirena placed. I told her I didnt think I could get it since I just had a baby and am BF she said I could at 10 weeks. Anyone know anything different?

  • Yes, you can breastfeed with a mirena. Mirena is a progesterone only contraceptive, just like the mini pill, the hormonal side effects are very similar.

I had my mirena placed in 12 weeks pp, I am still breastfeeding with no problems. My son is 7 1/2 months.

  • It is considered compatible with breastfeeding although it causes a supply decrease in a very low percentage of women who get it. You could get the paraguard instead which has no hormones and does not interfere with breastfeeding at all.

  • My doctor told me no, she put me on a mini pill. Most women don't get preggo while breastfeeding bc they don't Ovulate. How long have you been breastfeeding? Have you begain a regular cycle again?
