Does anyone know why hot meals aren't foodstamp approved but candy at the gas station is?

I only just found out that some quick marts accept foodstamps. My friend went inside and bought combos, sodas, chocolate bars and tic tacs with her fs card, yet prepared food like take and bake pizzas, rotisserie chicken, etc that actually atleast provide some nutrition aren't approved. Why?

  • energy drinks arent covered. don't know why hot foods are excluded. I guess they want you to eat frozen meals.

  • idk but it is pretty dumb :( I think take and bake pizzas are ok, in my area they are anyways, in fact our local pizza place (not a chain but a local company) can sell the take and bake ones to you with an EBT card (stamps). We've never tried it but i've seen it in their advertising and such.

  • That seems really dumb, I know. But, so far it's just "prepared" ie "cooked" food that is unapproved in most states.

  • Well, bakery cakes are prepared yet they are included in foodstamps. So it must not be a nutrition thing.

  • In california subway cold sandwiches are approved and in colorado papa murphys is. Any thing prepared but cold is okay and red bull is the only energy drink you can get.

  • Exactly, if its cold you can buy it, like already prepared but chilled fried chicken from the deli in a case, but not the hot fried chicken. Just makes no sense lol
