Homemade frosting

I know how to do cream cheese frosting using cream cheese and powdered sugar. What about regular frosting? Just use butter and if so how much? Salted or unsalted?

  • Cream cheese frosting swiped from Food Network Site
    4 ounces unsalted butter, softened
    4 ounces cream cheese, softened
    2 cups powdered sugar
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    In a large bowl, beat together the butter and cream cheese with an electric mixer. With the mixer on low speed, add the powdered sugar a cup at a time until smooth and creamy. Beat in the vanilla extract.

    Buttercream Icing

    I use the above with butter only (I like salted, but most recipes say un salted)
    And I use about Table spoon of half and half or milk
    I add confectioner's sugar until I have the consistency I like.

  • Ingredients

    • 3 cups confectioners' sugar

    • 1 cup butter

    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

    • 1 to 2 tablespoons whipping cream


    In a standing mixer fitted with a whisk, mix together sugar and butter. Mix on low speed until well blended and then increase speed to medium and beat for another 3 minutes.


    Add vanilla and cream and continue to beat on medium speed for 1 minute more, adding more cream if needed for spreading consistency.

  • Fluffy White Frosting


    1 cup sugar
    3 egg whites
    3 tablespoons water
    1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract


    In a large heavy saucepan over low heat or double boiler over simmering water, combine the sugar, egg whites, water and cream of tartar. With a portable mixer, beat mixture on low speed for 1 minute. Continue beating on low speed over low heat until frosting reaches 160°, about 8-10 minutes. Pour into a large bowl; add vanilla. Beat on high speed until frosting forms stiff peaks, about 7 minutes. Store in the refrigerator.

  • Vanilla Frosting


    2 cups confectioners' sugar
    2 tablespoons butter, softened
    2 tablespoons milk
    1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract


    In a bowl, combine the sugar, butter, milk and vanilla. Beat on medium speed until smooth and fluffy.

    Buttercream Frosting


    1 cup butter, softened
    8 cups confectioners' sugar
    2 teaspoons vanilla extract
    1/2 to 3/4 cup milk


    In a bowl, cream butter. Beat in sugar and vanilla. Add milk until frosting reaches desired consistency.

  • Here is the frosting I make

    1 part Crisco shortening

    2 parts powder sugar

    1 drop of flavor (your choice)

    1 egg white

    Example... if you are making a single batch, use 1 cup Crisco to 2 cups powder sugar
    I usually use vanilla as my flavor, but have used peppermint, coffee, and others...
    Mix together add food coloring if you like.
    It's wedding cake frosting, similar to what Wilton uses..
    Will hold up to 2 weeks in sealed container in frig.

  • Mine is similar to what Crafty posted - I use equal amounts of butter & shortening, a drizzle of heavy whipping cream, and however much powdered sugar makes it come out right. I beat the butter & shortening, add the powdered sugar until it's a nice consistency, then finish with the whipping cream - the purpose of it is more to make it fluffy than to thin it down, so beat it hard and not for too long.

  • We did sugar cookies the other night- the frosting was butter, powdered sugar and some vanilla extract.

  • My family ONLY likes my home made cream cheese frosting on EVERY cake, cookie or cupcake
    1 brick of cream cheese
    1/2 stick butter
    3 cups powder sugar '
    1 tsp vanilla
    1/4 tsp almond extract
