Experts say mass killings on the rise

 http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/12/14/mass-murder-rate-rising-newtown-shooting_n_2302590.html

See link.

According to the above article, there is an increase in mass killings and criminologist say to expect more.  What factors do you think are  contributing to this increase?   Other countries aren't showing increased levels of mass killing.

Why is the US more prone to these events right now?  ( no this isn't about guns)

  • When people train themselves and their children to think that they can do as the please and not have any consequences, people will push harder and harder to find where the limit is. IMO much of this is parental and societal.

  • I think we live in an isolated society with few community and family connections. Even when we live with other people we are often very isolated. For the few people on the fringe of society this leads to severe lack of empathy. Other counties have just as many mentally ill people so whats going on here?

  • I find that article very lacking in facts, especially since it's trying to say it's a "trend" when it's only looking at 6 years. That's laughable. It's not an upswing, it'd doctoring numbers to say what you want them to say. Reality is this "trend" is still far lower than it ever was 20 or 30 years ago and beyond.

  • but it could have been that mine looked at the whole, not just this year. if you looked at just this year it would look like they are on the rise, but over the past 40 years, no its not.

  • This year can skew the results because lets face it this year has been an awful year when it comes to deaths from mass murders. Even if it's only over the last 5 or 6 years that doesn't make me feel any better.

  • "thats weird...i posted an AP article a few days ago saying they ARE NOT on the rise."

Which just goes to show that anyone can distort facts in order to prove they are correct. Most of what I've read over the past year or so has stated that they are not on the rise, but who knows....
