What is the traditional gift for the father when they have a boy? and for a girl?

I've heard of fathers giving or receiving cigars as a gift for one or the other. I've seen pink cigars for girls. What is the real tradition?

  • I've never heard of it being to announce the gender. DH handed out Snickers (full size) with our first, bubble gum cigars with another...and I think we skipped it with the other 2. I remember a friend of my parents giving my dad a generic cigar (no color wrapper or anything, just a cigar) when they had their first baby.

  • The baby is a gift in itself. I have never heard of giving the father a gift when the child is born.

  • My ex gave out cigars with pink bands around them when our DD was born, & the hospital store had blue for a boy. I don't think I've ever heard of doing it to announce the gender, but you could do the same.

  • Okay, the father gives the gift to his friends or family to break the news of whether or not the baby is a boy or a girl. What's the gift? I've heard cigars.
