My baby is 5 plus weeks old- should she be smiling?? Or making some kind of eye contact?

I am worried... What do you think?

  • Not really yet. Smiling doesn't generally happen until at least 2 or 3 months before they do it as an emotion. Eye contact, not too much. I would say around the same time they smile.

  • My ds rarely was awake long enough to even eat at a month old. I think the smiling and all that started at about 2 1/2 months. I really would not worry! I wouold give it to 3 months before you worry but you will have a 3 month well visit and your pedi can advise you when to be concearned.

  • Every child is different. My children made eye contact early, smiling at a month or so, but the older one didn't walk until 17 months, so it's really hard to guess. . If you are still wondering at your next pediatrician appointment ask, and they'll make sure all is well.

  • I don't think my son smiled many "real" smiles at someone until he was 6 weeks old. I don't really remeber when he made a lot of eye contact... probably around the same age.

  • I read in a book that they start smiling at 5 weeks, and I was about to have a heart attack, since she was 5 wks and hadn't. She eventually did a couple of weeks later, but boy did I worry! She was our first foster child, straight from the hospital, and I watched every tiny thing about her precious life! Relax & give it a couple of weeks, she's new! Hugs, Janet
PS...she gets shots at 2 mos, if she isn't by then, ask your dr. But I bet she will be! :)
