My son is seeing spots...

DS, age 12, told me today that he sometimes experiences light-headedness, sudden pain in his head, and seeing spots to the point where he can't see. He said it's like bright lights flashing. I've noticed it happens when he stands up from sitting or laying down. I'm going to get him into the Dr. but can someone help explain this? Maybe you know what it could be? I'm very concerned.

  • Could be alot of things he needs his heart and eyes checked.  Could also be a migrane reaction.  Migranes are neurological and can have lots of symptoms besides headache.

  • He had to wear a heart monitor awhile back for a month. He was having palpatations. They saw it happen a few times, but wasn't anything concerning to them. He had no follow-up. I will mention that when I bring him in.

  • It could be any number of things. It could be an eye problem, a heart problem, a blood sugar problem, migraines, anything. I get lights when a migraine is coming on. Get him in to be seen by a doctor. Good luck.

  • Spots and lightheadedness can also be caused by high blood pressure

  • I would get a second opinion on the palpitationsjust to ease your mind.  Especially since he is still having symptoms.  The palpitations could be a reaction he is having because of other symptoms.  I wouldn't worry but I'd follow up with another doctor or further testing.

  • He just told me today. I'll call first thing Monday. It's happened just a few times, and not every time he gets up. But I'll bring him in asap.

  • Definitely take him to his primary care physician to see what is causing his symptoms.
