5 month old still gets up twice to eat at night!

Everyone I talk took thinks that it is crazy that he does not sleep through the night yet! He gets a bowl of cereal before bed and still gets up 2 times to eat! Any way to help him sleep through??? If I add a cereal feeding in the the a.m., after he wakes up, will that do anything for his night?

  • Only twice? Pretty good, actually. Don't expect eight straight hours int he first year. It *can* happen but often doesn't.

Here's what I'd suggest though...DROP the cereal before bed. The carbs in cereal raise blood sugar levels. When those levels drop after a coupld of hours, baby wakes up hungry.

We did an unscientific survey on the breastfeeding moms group last year, and the overwhelming finding was that cereal made babies sleep WORSE. (Mine went from only a couple of wakeups like yours to waking every hour...we dumped the before-bed solids.)

  • Is she breast fed? Breast fed milk is easier to digest so usually these babies wake up hungry more often.

  • Breast or formula fed...more often than not cereal usually makes sleeping worse. You're filling him up with FEWER calories than he would normally take with either breast milk or formula. Once it's digested, they usually wake up even more hungry.

Give solids during the day at meal times...give liquid nourishment right before bed. It won't hurt, might help. But adding more cereal during the day isn't going to help at all.

I actually hear of more babies taking longer to start sleeping through the night rather than younger ones.....

  • 2 x's per night is great actually! I would also stop the cereal. it is simple carbs, which the body converts to sugar, which spikes blood sugar levels and then they drop a few hours later. Same effect a big carb loaded meal has on us. Makes us sluggish and grumpy!

  • 5 mos and only waking twice? Not bad. He's probably legitimately hungry. He'll sleep through the night...eventually.
