I'm proofreading a history book, and I found an interesting bit of trivia on where the expression "hear a pin drop" comes from. Apparently, in English coffeehouses in the 1700's, businessmen would bid on comodities and the like. To keep time, they stuck pins into lighted candles. When the candles burned down and the wax melted, letting the pins drop on the table, the bidding was over.
