  • the role of the godparent is to guide your child spiritually in your faith.

  • The necessity of godparents or baptism is based solely upon your church or denominations beliefs on the matter.

  • Because the godparent is responsible for helping guide you with raising your child in the faith they are being baptized into. If you slack off being a good role model, they are there to reinforce the importance of getting them back into the church and into your faith. They are basically an insurance policy of the church to make sure their flock doesn't stray.

  • I am curious how you can want to get your child baptized and not know the answer to this question. It makes me wonder if you know your own religion when you ask questions like this, If you really do not know then I would ask the head of your church.

  • You don't necessarily. Not every religion has godparents.
