My baby had shots today is this normal?

My baby had his shots today. He was already sick (cold) and looked like he didn't feel good a couple hours after. He's now been asleep for about 2 hours. Is it normal for them to sleep like this? He's 6 months.

  • Sometimes they do sleep a lot after shots. It could cause a bit of a fever, also. I work for the Red Cross and we tell people that as long as they don't have a fever or any other symptoms, they can donate, so I would guess it would be the same with vaccinations.

  • Your really not suppose to let them get shots if they are sick. Dont remember if that means not with a fever or just sick with anything. I will have to check.

But in answer to your question, I remember mine slept a lot after shots, but I dont know if it was from just pure exhaustion with the whole day.

  • I asked him if he could get them because he has a cold/cough. He said that as long as he doesn't have a fever.

  • Yeah, depending on what the shot is for it can make them a little fevered, sluggish and generally yucky-feeling.

  • My oldest was always really sluggish after getting her shots (my youngest has only had one). Monitor him, though, for a fever. I know he's already sick, but don't let that mask any signs or symptoms of any reaction to the shots. He should be back to normal by tomorrow :o)

  • Yes it is. Mine were always very sleepy after their shots. I do know they are not supposed to get immunizations when they have a cold, but I am not sure how that would affect them as they do not use live viruses for the immunizations any more. I would say that if he gets a fever goes over 103 or stays at 103 even after Tylenol, wakes up and seems extremely lethargic, or anything just completely out of the ordinary, I would take him to the ER.

  • I had one who slept for almost the next 24 hours straight! lol

Getting shots when they have a cold is fine. They're not supposed to get shots if they have a FEVER.

  • I don't care of my son has a fever or cold or whatever. He doesn't get any shots unless he's feeling 100% that being said he's only had 2 so far because I"m spreading them out...but yes it's normal that they sleep at least he did for like 4 hours straight....I'd write down all reactions though just so you have a log of it.
